David Cook takes on Mariah

David Cook sings Last night was Mariah Carey night on American Idol. When my friends and I first heard that they we’re going to sing Mariah Carey songs on AI, we just blurted out one phrase.

“What will David Cook sing?”

Mariah Carey is well known for her 5 octave vocal range that she uses extensively in her songs which most of the time are very mellow and ballad-like in nature. Her songs are also filled with what we describe in the Filipino as “kalandian” or femininity and are not that quite guy friendly. David Cook has a voice and a thats has more of a rock edge to it and out of the box there really isn’t any way he could sing a Mariah song. Well he proved that wrong.

I never really liked “always be my baby” when it was originally released. It felt like the song had a lot of deep meaning but was sung in a very shallow manner. David Cook changed all that when he sung his version of “always be my baby” last night as the second to the last performance.

He re-arranged it with a rock/orchestra mix that really made it very climactic. I loved how the violins entered and the song now just seems to sound so much deeper than what it originally sounded.

David Cook definitely had the best performance of the night.

I haven’t watched American Idol this season. I was incredibly addicted to it last season (and was very upset to see Blake Lewis lose — he was my favorite!). I just didn’t like the group of people they had for this season — no one really interested me. But from what I’ve read, Cook seems to be a fan favorite…so he’ll probably end up winning in the end.

honestly, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to David cook before this. David Archuleta has sort of been the show stealer since day one but this performance I guess made all the difference for David Cook.

hello? mariah’s version is far better than cook. cook just made it singable but the genius arrangement is really in the original. i like the guitar in the start of the original version. and a lot more.
